Lama | The Laboratory for Additive Manufacturing in Architecture

Lama

The Laboratory for Additive Manufacturing in Architecture (Lama) is an environment for research and education, focusing on additive manufacturing, digital fabrication, and robotics for the built environment. It was initiated by the Digital Technologies Section (formerly the Design Informatics Chair) in 2018. Lama aims to contribute to a more sustainable, resilient, and efficient construction practice supported by digital technologies, while addressing societal and environmental values. Its focus lies on the full-scale production of architectural components through integrated design, rationalisation, prototyping, analysis, and validation, in collaboration with other research groups and facilities, as well as industrial partners.

The lab serves as a platform for collaboration to advance making in architecture through digital technologies, in both research and education. It supports interdisciplinary research across disciplines related to the design and production of the built environment. It is also open to students of the faculty and beyond, as well as anyone interested in developing knowledge and skills in this field, through a learning-by-doing approach.

The lab is equipped with several types of 3D printers, including FDM, LDM, and SLA systems, alongside industrial and collaborative robotic arms used for 3D printing and other digital fabrication applications. It supports working with conventional materials while also encouraging hands-on experimentation with emerging materials. Its activities mainly focus on earth-based materials (e.g. clay), bio-based materials, and recycled thermoplastics. The lab also aims to recycle most of the materials used and improve sustainability in this regard.

Lama welcomes researchers, educators, practitioners, and students interested in digital fabrication in the built environment in a broad sense and encourages collaboration across disciplines.
