3D Modelling
3D modelling is the act of creating digital representation of 3D objects. Modelling objects can be done using polygon mesh modelling and NURBS modelling for example. These digital geometries can be edited, copied, joined, and so on. A 3D modelling model typically has a viewport in which you control a camera to view and manipulate the geometry using a pre-set list of commands and operations.
3D modelling is widely used in the architecture, construction, and engineering industry as means to represent buildings and designs. Some of the most notable 3D modelling programs include:
- Rhinoceros3D: Rhino is a modelling software that can create and edit NURBS-based which is an industry standard in many design and engineers who work in 3D. Rhino can also translate NURBS geometry into mesh which is more suitable for tasks such as rendering and animations and model complex organic shapes using SubD objects.
- SolidWorks: SolidWorks is a 3D CAD software, similar to Rhino, tailored towards high-precision modelling such as creating parts for assembly of automotive components or facade components.
- Blender: Blender is a free, open-source software that specializes in creating mesh geometries that are suitable for renderings, animations, and special effects.
- SketchUp: SketchUp is a 3D modelling tool that is suitable for quick modelling tasks and is generally user-friendly and allows for quick means to create/edit solid objects and surfaces. Plugins can also be coupled with it to provide rendering capabilities and 2D drawings documentation.
- 3ds Max: 3ds Max is a professional 3D modelling software distributed by Autodesk that is versatile and can create objects, render, animate, and special effects, similar to blender.

Rhinoceros3D
Rhino is a 2D and 3D CAD modelling software for creating 3D models. It’s a percise tool that is commonly used for complex forms modelling, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and 3D printing. Rhino is also particularly known for its visual programming plugin, Grasshopper, which is an extension to Rhino allowing designers and engineers to define variable parameters for Rhino geometries.

Blender
Blender is a free, open-source software that specializes in creating mesh geometries that are suitable for renderings, animations, and special effects. Although it is commonly used for film animations and character movement, it’s also a useful tool for modelling mesh geometries and an excellent rendering capabilities. It also has many add-ons including a visual scripting tool similar to Grasshopper allowing more customaization and control over your results.
Learn Blender
Blender tutorials are shared by its community members and it is easy to follow tutorials to learn basics of 3D modelling with a free, open-source software. Tutorials are widely available on platforms such as YouTube. Blender also provides a manual where you can read more in detail on specifics of commands provided in the program. Blender Manual
